Weekly SEO and Marketing Recap: Aug 25, 2026

Hey — Ali here 👋
This week’s a messy one. Meta is yanking the placement brake. Spam update’s done, so don’t get cute with the money pages. Search campaigns start auto-upgrading to AI Max on Sep 1.
Five minutes. Pick one. Lock it in.
LET’S GET STARTED →
Lead Story
You will not keep Meta ads off Reels and search
Jon Loomer screenshotted an Ads Manager notice this week: excluding placements, platforms, devices, and operating systems will no longer be available at the ad set. Meta has not named a date. That is the whole bag. No official blog. No countdown. Just a notice in the product, and then the last manual brake is gone.
Advantage+ already leaks into junk surfaces. Messenger Stories, Audience Network, search, Reels. You have been excluding the worst of it by hand. When the toggle dies, spend redistributes into whatever Meta’s system likes this week, and your CPA report gets muddy before you can prove it.
Do this today: open live sets. If you see the notice, move what you still can to account-level Placement Controls in Advertising Settings. Write current CPA by placement. That screenshot is the only baseline you will have.
🔎 Search, SEO & Google
The August spam update is done. Sit still.
Official Search Status Dashboard: started Aug 18 at 09:27 PT, finished Aug 21 at 01:49 PT. Global. All languages. Third spam update of 2026. Google called it a normal spam update. It does not target link spam or site-reputation abuse. Google would not say what share of queries moved.
If you got clipped, read the spam policies. Recovery can take months. If you did not get clipped, do not “refresh” the site this week. Last issue we told you it was rolling out. This week it is over. Measure from the 21st, not from the broken GSC days before it.
From X · launch post · @googlesearchc · Aug 18 “Today we released the August 2026 spam update. We'll update our ranking release history page when the rollout is complete.” |
From X · @donmend0 · Aug 20 “We are so back! Seems like the latest Spam Update fixed the false-positive issue. Thanks again, Barry, for the backup!” |
This is the official launch tweet from Tuesday Aug 18. Not this morning. Dashboard closed the update Friday Aug 21. The second post (Aug 20) is an operator who got clipped, then came back. That is not a Google promise. It is what recovery looks like when it actually happens.
Reddit’s ChatGPT citations fell off a cliff
Promptwatch via Search Engine Land: reddit.com’s share of ChatGPT Search citations went from 3.83% (Jul 18–Aug 7 average) to 0.52% (Aug 14–17). That is an 86.4% relative drop in four days. Promptwatch cannot rule out a data-collection issue. OpenAI has said nothing. Either way, Reddit seeding is not a protected GEO cheat. Stop building a 2026 plan on threads you posted in 2024.
From X · @glenngabe · Aug 20 “ChatGPT isn't showing Reddit at all!!! Wait, there they are. :) So I don't know... I need to dig deeper here, but there doesn't seem to be any technical block from what I'm seeing.” |
From X · @lilyraynyc · Aug 20 “New Peec AI data from suggests ChatGPT 5.6 is reducing fan-out queries and citations for listicles, comparisons. Are they cracking down on GEO-focused articles?” |
Glenn is looking at the same Reddit drop. Lily is looking at listicle and comparison pages getting fewer citations. Same week. Same leak.
Googlebot stopped unrolling your double-escaped JSON-LD
Aug 21: one HTML unescape pass, then it stops. Double-escaped entities stay literal. Product prices, FAQ answers, review stars. If a plugin HTML-escaped the JSON and then escaped it again, rich results can go quiet with no error in Search Console. Fix at the generator. Use real JSON escapes, not stacked HTML entities.
Embed Google’s Preferred Sources button, or the aggregator gets the badge
Google Search blog, Aug 20. Readers click the button on your page, you get added as a Preferred Source, they stay on your URL. Preferred sources get highlighted in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google says 600,000+ unique sources are already picked. If you publish money pages, this is a five-minute add. Code is in Search Central.
Pew: 1 in 10 pages now look AI-written. The spam update hunts this.
July 2026 snapshot, 10,000 English pages, Open Pangram. 10% show significant AI authorship. Over one-third of pages dated after ChatGPT. .com is about 10× .edu/.gov. This is a detector, not Google’s classifier. Do not claim “Google will demote 10% of the web.” Do claim this: shipping another AI template farm the week a spam update finished is how you volunteer.
Generative UI is landing in AI Overviews. Tool pages lose the click.
Worldwide English in AI Mode already. Rolling into AI Overviews this week. Mortgage calculators, unit converters, quizzes. Google’s own paper: generated interfaces beat the top search result in most head-to-heads on their test set. List which of your tools Google can rebuild from public math. Keep the ones that need your data. Don’t invent a CTR loss percentage. Google didn’t give one.
💰 Ads & Paid Media
Some Search campaigns auto-upgrade to AI Max on Sep 1
Campaign-level Broad Match and standalone Automatically Created Assets migrate in place through September. Brand lists carry over. You cannot create those legacy setups anymore. Dynamic Search Ads get until February 2027. If you still need a clean test, turn AI Max experiments on now, with brand and location guards left on. Google added that this week. Multi-campaign budget/ROI A/B tests land in September. Don’t scale on vibes.
ChatGPT Ads preselects Maximize results. It will not hold a CPA.
Eligible new ad groups get Maximize results by default. OpenAI’s own help: it prioritizes result volume and does not guarantee CPA, CPC, or ROAS. Manual: Max bid is still there, per ad group, every time. There is no account-level “always use manual.” If you build a fourth ad group at 6pm, the default spends. Flip it. Platform targeting (iOS / Android / Web) and 1-day view-through also landed. View-through is a column. It does not feed bidding.
Microsoft Ads: new campaigns lose Max CPC on Oct 1
New standalone Maximize Conversions, Max Conversion Value, and Maximize Clicks campaigns cannot take a Max CPC ceiling after Oct 1. Existing campaigns keep it. Portfolio, Target Impression Share, and eCPC still get a cap. If you need a ceiling on a new Microsoft campaign, create it before Oct 1. Same week, AI Max rolled to all Microsoft Advertising accounts.
Language targeting leaves Search in late September
Campaign-level language dies on Search and AI Max. Google matches on the ad and the landing page. You do not have to merge language-split campaigns. You do have to make sure the creative language is the one you meant. API buyers: stop sending language criteria on new Search campaigns.
Demand Gen keeps making videos you didn’t approve
Pausing the auto-generated video ad does nothing. The setting on the original ad is still On, so Google respawns it. Turn off Generated videos under Asset optimization, then pause the leftover. EU, India, and New York get an “edited with AI” label on those assets. If brand control matters, kill it this afternoon.
🛡️ Sites, feeds & security
Cloudflare will write your AI-bot policy into robots.txt
Bot Preference Sync, Aug 21. Dashboard setting and robots.txt stop arguing with each other. Misconfig can 403 Googlebot. New ad-funded domains get Training and Agent blocks from Sep 15. If you run money sites on Cloudflare, audit the AI-bot policy before that date. Do not “block AI” and take Googlebot with it.
If you run Pods or Elementor Pro, update today
Wordfence, Aug 20–21. Pods: unauthenticated attackers can reset the admin password. 100,000+ sites. Elementor Pro: unauth file upload on a published form field can take the whole site. Millions of installs. I am not printing CVE IDs we didn’t pull from a fully loaded Wordfence page. Patch first. Argue later.
Merchant Center images must be 500×500 from Jan 31, 2027
Google already shows “Image too small” / upcoming policy warnings. Recommended size is 1500×1500. Affiliates on Shopping and free listings: fix the feed now, not in Q4 panic. Small images drop. That’s the whole policy.

📅 Event Spotlight
Two weeks out. Book the one that pays. Skip the rest.
Affiliate World Americas
Sep 7–8 · Cancún

First AW Americas. 2,000+ people, 110+ countries, 35+ speakers, 120+ advertisers, 40+ traffic sources. Affiliate pass is $1,389 on sale ($1,999 full). GITEX lands two days later, so this is the week you are either in Mexico or you are not. The juice is in the room.
When · Sep 7–8, 2026
Where · Cancun Center, Blvd. Kukulkán Km. 9, Punta Cancún
Why · First Americas edition. Media buyers, networks, and offers in one hall.
GITEX AI Türkiye
Sep 9–10 · Istanbul

First GITEX on Turkish soil. AI, ads, fintech, ecom. Google Cloud and SAP are on the bill. If Cancún is the affiliate floor, this is the bigger tech room two days later. Don’t stack both unless you have a second body.
When · Sep 9–10, 2026
Where · Istanbul Expo Center
Why · First GITEX in Türkiye. Partner meetings, not just a keynote.
⚡ Quick win of the week
Two lists. One afternoon.
Ads Manager: screenshot placement CPA, then set account-level Placement Controls if the sunset notice is in the account.
Google Ads: export Search campaigns still on campaign-level Broad Match or Automatically Created Assets. Turn an AI Max experiment on before Sep 1.
That is the week. Everything else can wait until those two are done.
👀 Worth watching
Industry blogs say Messenger Stories ads die in Ads Manager on Aug 27. Meta’s own developers post says the API silently strips story from messenger_positions on v26 now, and on all API versions Oct 27, and that this “does not affect Ads Manager.” I will not print Aug 27 as Meta-official. Audit the surface. Don’t quote a date Meta didn’t print.
🎯 Move of the week
If spam didn’t hit you, sit still. If Pods or Elementor Pro is on the money site, update it before you write another AI file. Dead plugins steal more than a missed headline.
📰 From the AffNinja blog
PropellerAds vs RichAds: the traffic source is the campaign
Most affiliate campaigns do not fail because the offer is bad. They fail because the source does not match the offer, the funnel, the budget, and your testing patience. We have bought both. This is the feel, not a feature table.
One banned ad account can wipe a week of profit
Same device, same fingerprint, same result. Our 2026 antidetect roundup is for people running more than one paid account, not for people collecting logos.
🧠 Quick quiz

✅ Quiz answers
Q1 — B: Aug 21, 01:49 PT. The update launched Aug 18. That is when it started, not when it finished.
Q2 — C: OpenAI says Maximize results prioritizes result volume and does not guarantee CPA, CPC, or ROAS. Manual: Max bid is the ceiling if you need one.
I’d rather leave you with one useful move than another ten stories to forget by tomorrow. Pick the Meta placement screenshot or the AI Max list. Do that before Friday. If you’re going to Cancún, book it this week.
