Weekly SEO and Marketing Recap: July 21, 2025

👋 Hey Ninjas,

The algorithm never sleeps and neither do we—grab your cold brew, the week’s hottest wins and fails just landed in your inbox.

LET’S GET STARTED →

🔥 Lead Story — Google Core Update Chaos Continues

  1. Tracking dashboards stayed “hot” all weekend, with many sites riding a roller-coaster of traffic spikes and slumps.

  2. The update itself ran 16 days 18 hours (Jun 30 → Jul 17), making it the year’s second core update and one of the most impactful so far.

  3. Common pattern: partial recoveries for sites hit in 2023/24, followed by fresh drops once the rollout was declared done.

📌 Takeaway: wait a few more days before reacting—Google often leaves a “tail” of experiments after a core update.

🔍 SEO & Search

I ran into this too! For me the first 2 results went there. We had this problem for the longest time with Search Console too. Having services behind a login makes things hard. I talked with Martin about this a while back, there might be a podcast episode about this kind of thing :-).

John Mueller (@johnmu.com)2025-07-15T17:34:31.254Z

Google’s John Mueller reminded devs that pages sitting behind a sign-in wall give crawlers little to work with, so they struggle to surface in Search.

Google addresses whether making changes specifically for SEO purposes is acceptable practice.

💰 Affiliate & Content Marketing

Industry experiencing significant growth with AI positioned to accelerate expansion further.

Some sites report partial recoveries from September 2023 helpful content update during recent core changes.

📱 Advertising & PPC

A Triple Whale study covering $3 billion in spend found Snap ads outperformed every major rival on both ROAS and CPA—especially for fashion retailers.

Early third-party data showed first-day sales down 41% versus 2024, but stretching the event to four days helped Amazon still claim a “record” haul.

📲 Social Media & Platforms

With Linda Yaccarino out, insiders say Elon Musk could run the platform via an AI-first structure, leaning on a GM/CRO instead of a classic chief exec.

77% of Snapchatters use visual search for clothing vs. 50% of non-users, with 80%+ citing social media as go-to for fashion trends.

🚨 Security & Policy

The suit targets a network that pre-installed malware on 10 million uncertified Android devices, using them for ad fraud and potentially more serious attacks.
